SETU Researchers to Play Key Role in New €460 Million National Research Investment

# Ireland Launches €460 Million Research Initiative With Quantum Focus

Ireland has unveiled an ambitious €460 million investment in seven new research centres called “Rinn,” targeting strategic innovation areas including quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and advanced pharmaceuticals. South East Technological University (SETU) will anchor three of these centres, contributing specialists in AI, pharmaceutical research, and quantum information science—the study of how quantum mechanics principles can enhance computing and communications.

The eight-year program, administered through Research Ireland, aims to establish world-class research hubs that bridge academia and industry. The initiative will create over 800 PhD positions and support more than 577 research roles across 17 Irish institutions. Officials expect the investment to catalyze an additional €500 million from industry partners, strengthening Ireland’s competitive standing in emerging technologies.

The centres begin operations in July 2026.
