# Google Passes on U.S. Quantum Funding Over Development Concerns
Google has opted out of the Trump administration’s $2 billion quantum technology funding initiative, citing restrictive program conditions that would hamper its development pace. Google Quantum AI’s Chief Operating Officer Charina Chou explained at the Semafor Tech Summit that the company prioritizes flexibility and speed in building practical quantum computers—systems that solve problems beyond conventional computing’s reach.
Microsoft and IonQ similarly declined participation, while nine other firms including IBM, Quantinuum, and PsiQuantum accepted letters of intent. The decision highlights deeper industry disagreements about government support: some favor direct commercial backing, while others prefer foundational research investments. Chou also flagged workforce challenges, warning that restrictive immigration policies could hamper America’s ability to attract top quantum talent globally.
Analysts suggest Google’s absence could create disadvantages in future federal procurement programs.
