# Vilnius Researchers Develop Magnet-Free Method for Controlling Quantum Light

Scientists at Vilnius University have unveiled a promising technique for manipulating structured light without relying on magnetic fields—a breakthrough that could streamline quantum technologies. The team developed a theoretical model demonstrating how specially prepared atomic gases can reshape complex laser beams called optical vector vortices, which combine twisted spatial patterns with polarization (the direction light waves vibrate).

The key innovation is a feedback loop: light pre-programs the atoms, which then reshape the light in return. This all-optical approach eliminates bulky, expensive magnetic equipment previously required for such control. The method’s applications span quantum computing, high-capacity quantum communications using qudits (quantum data units encoding more information than traditional bits), and advanced optical sensing.

By removing the magnetic field requirement, researchers have created a more scalable, flexible platform for next-generation quantum systems.
