Former Microsoft Quantum Employee’s New Chinese-Based Startup Lands Pre-A Funding

# Quantum Startup Raises $44 Million on Neutral-Atom Approach

Shanghai-based Taiyi Quantum has secured $44 million in Pre-A funding, signaling strong investor appetite for China’s quantum computing sector. Led by Liu Hongbin, a former Microsoft Azure Quantum architect, the startup is developing quantum computers using ytterbium-based neutral atoms—individual atoms trapped and manipulated with laser light to serve as quantum bits.

This approach offers potential advantages over traditional solid-state qubits: neutral-atom systems can be arranged flexibly and controlled with precision, potentially simplifying manufacturing while enabling scalability. Ytterbium’s atomic properties provide cleaner operation with reduced noise and interference, supporting more reliable quantum processors.

The funding round, backed by major investors including Gaorong Venture Capital and IDG Capital, is notable given Taiyi’s six-month age. The diverse investor base spanning finance and industry underscores growing confidence in quantum technology’s commercial potential beyond Western markets.
