# Microsoft Harnesses AI Agents to Accelerate Quantum Computing Breakthrough
Microsoft is deploying autonomous AI systems—known as agentic AI—to turbocharge its quantum computing program. These intelligent agents operate independently on complex, multi-step tasks while remaining under human oversight, helping scientists design materials, automate experiments, and analyze two decades of accumulated research data.
The strategy centers on Microsoft’s Majorana 2 chip, a topological qubit design engineered to resist errors better than conventional approaches. The company reports mean qubit lifetimes of about 20 seconds—roughly 1,000 times longer than its first-generation system—partly thanks to AI-driven optimization.
Agentic AI excels at identifying patterns across disciplines that humans might miss and automating tedious experimental cycles that previously took weeks. The technology also accelerates materials discovery by simulating candidate configurations before physical testing begins.
