# Microsoft and Quantinuum Demonstrate Breakthrough in Quantum Error Correction
Microsoft Quantum and Quantinuum have achieved a significant milestone in making quantum computers more reliable. A new Nature study shows that their error-correction techniques reduced computational mistakes by 11- to 800-fold compared to unprotected calculations—a crucial step toward practical quantum systems.
The challenge: quantum bits (qubits) are fragile and accumulate errors during computation. The solution: distributing information across multiple physical qubits in ways that detect and fix errors without destroying data. Using two custom approaches—the carbon code and tesseract code—the researchers demonstrated that current hardware already benefits from error correction, even during ongoing calculations.
The team tested their methods on Quantinuum’s trapped-ion quantum processors, scaling up to 12 logical qubits. Results showed repeated mid-computation error suppression, suggesting the field is transitioning from experimental proof-of-concept toward fault-tolerant systems capable of solving real scientific problems. However, challenges remain: scaling requires faster real-time error processing and further hardware improvements.
